During 2014 Papelera del Oria made two investments in their paper machine with German constructor Voith:

  • In January 2014, a new Duoformer D was installed which contributed to a much improved formation of the paper.
  • In April 2014, the conversion from a hard nip calender to a soft nip calendar, improved the surface properties and printability of the paper.

As a consequence, new paper grades were developed in the interim, including paper for shopping bags, and this subsequently contributed to increase global sales for Oria.

In April 2015 Papelera del Oria made a further important investment in the paper machine, as outlined in the latest Strategic Plan dated August 2014.  This recent decision was taken to continue the improvement of the current paper quality, as well as widening the product range for new markets.  This further investment was the acquisition and installation of: a new Film Press – Speed Sizer and a Twin Soft Nip Calender; also from Voith. This investment moves the Oria paper machine into a cutting edge technological position and since the start up on 13th April 2015 the expected important improvements in the paper quality have been realised.

Film Press – Speed Sizer

The transition from a Size Press (older technology) to a Film Press – Speed Sizer, allows the application of a surface treatment based on starch, but also including more additives (pigments, binders and other raw materials) in order to improve the surface characteristics. In the existing Size Press, the paper went through a “bath” generated between 2 rollers and the surface treatment was based on the uncontrolled absorption of the treatment into the paper surface.  With the new Film Press – Speed Sizer the main improvement is in the uniform and controlled application of the treatment to the paper, which is achieved by spreading the surface treatment over two metering presses (Film Press), the resultant film is then transferred onto the paper surface.

Twin Soft Nip Calender

The substitution of the simple contact pressure calender, with a double contact Twin Soft Nip Calender enables the increase of the contact pressure between rollers up to 4 times compared to existing levels. Additionally this permits the increase of the contact temperature up to 180ºC roll surface temperature, as a result of the 2 Thermoroll presses, all of which contributes to increasing the smoothness of the paper whilst maintaining its bulk.

These paper machine investments make significant technological changes to the surface treatment and paper finishing processes, meaning substantial improvements in the quality of every paper grade since the start up on 13th of April 2015. These are the main improvements for the different paper grades after the rebuild:

The Oria Print paper quality offers an improved smoothness, a uniform, soft and attractive feel to both paper sides.  A more consistent formation is noticeable in appearance, validated by an increase in opacity measured in laboratory tests, as well as an even caliper profile, which improves the web tension of the product in reels.

The described changes will contribute to improved results of different printing technologies, whether printing in black and white or in full color.

High substance paper offers even better stiffness than previously.

The application of the starch as a film to the surface of the paper, achieves better smoothness and improved feel for the non calendered versions Oria Bulk 1,40; 1,50 and 1,65, as well as a notably higher smoothness on the calendered version Oria Bulk 1,80. The improvement of formation and opacity will allow good printing results in black and white and also in full color, even in the most critical substances before the rebuild, 70 and 80 gsm.

The most important opportunity in the Oria Smooth quality is the possibility to reduce the caliper of the paper up to 1.00 cm3/g expressed as bulk, for substances between 50 and 90 gsm, which was impossible before the rebuild. The increase of the contact pressure will contribute to a much higher smoothness, Bendtsen smoothness below 100 ml/min, not available with the previous machine version (max. 140 ml/min).

Oria Bag quality, maintains the usual mechanical characteristics, but improves the surface quality due to a higher smoothness and better printing results are expected for the bag producers. In addition to this, the actual paper machine permits the development of new products with higher smoothness’ and gloss, for the production of not only shopping bags, but also bags for other applications (sugar, flour, bread, etc.).

We are convinced that the implemented investments will contribute not only to consolidate our actual products in terms of quality, but will also create new opportunities in other types of paper. This will permit widening the range of products offered to our customers, looking forward to achieving our customers’ satisfaction.
